Linux desktop PC

Bild von AutomaticDefence
As my previous experience with Linux was limited and often frustrating, I was initially hesitant to consider it as a primary operating system. However, there have been significant improvements regarding the entry hurdle for new users since the last time I experimented with Linux some years ago and consequently CD images of a few distributions were downloaded, including openSUSE and Kubuntu. Because it proved troublesome in the past, the Matrox G550 previously installed for driver compatibility with Windows Vista, which runs surprisingly well on this machine despite its age, was swapped for an ATi Rage 128 Pro.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS supports this card as well as all other components out of the box and was relatively easy to install and configure even for me as a newbie, and most regularly used desktop applications also have an official Linux build. While this PC can be considered outdated, the low system requirements combined with the reasonably recent hard disk drive results in a better user experience than the comparatively outdated Windows XP (SP3) from a performance point of view.
